Johann Gottlob Ficker
Violin maker
(1744 – 1832)
Johann Gottlob Ficker was the son and pupil of Johann Caspar Ficker, admitted to the violin makers guild in 1764. His work exhibited a superior quality of the typical Ficker style based on the Stainer model, characterized by a well-cut scroll featuring a concentric volute with an extended last turn behind the eye and a swan-neck pegbox. The varnish was thin and brittle, appearing yellow or sometimes a darker red-brown. Like others in the family, he occasionally mischievously suggested a Cremonese origin on his labels, although his instruments were distinctly different from the Cremonese style. He branded his work internally with *1 * G * F *.
