                                    (1879 – 1948)

Andrew Young Smillie was the son, pupil, and assistant of Alexander Smillie. He was credited with over 200 violins, as well as some violas and cellos. He belonged to the distinguished 19th century Scottish school of makers and worked alongside his father, succeeding him in the business at St George's Road in 1919. After Andrew's death, the shop continued to operate, managed by his daughter Ina until 1977. His work was very fine, similar to that of his father, but in some respects superior, being generally lighter and slightly more delicately crafted. He completed more than 200 violins, violas, and cellos, using Stradivari- and Guarneri-based models, and applied both spirit and oil red-brown varnish. His violas were made on a small contralto form.
