Jean Ouvrard was a pupil of Claude Pierray. He served as master of the violin makers guild from 1742 to 1743. Established around 1735 in the me de l'Ecole, he employed G. Cousineau and an apprentice named François Feury. His widow later married Salomon. His violins and cellos were crafted on a small Amatise model, with workmanship that was slightly finer than that of Pierray. The varnish used was golden-yellow or red-brown. Viols and quintons by him are found in museum collections in Brussels, New York, and Basle.
