Jean Bauer
Violin maker
(1914 – 2005)
Jean Bauer was the son of Gaston Bauer and a pupil of M. Didier in Mattaincourt. In 1936, he worked in Le Havre but was compelled to relocate to Angers due to the events of the Second World War. His early work was based on the Guarneri model, but he later developed a personal style that emphasized classical proportions. He produced very fine work with a good transparent red-orange varnish. He received awards in Paris in 1929, in Toulouse, and again in Paris in 1931, as well as in Paris in 1937, Angers in 1942, and The Hague in 1949.
