James Brown was originally a silk-weaver in Shoreditch and became a pupil and assistant of Thomas Kennedy around 1800. He later established his own shop in Wheeler Street, Spitalfields. His work was of good quality, though it was unremarkable for the time and place. Some pieces featured good red varnish, while others tended towards a dull brown.
