                                    Violin maker
                                    (d. 1981)

Paul Gerhard Schmidt studied under G. Jiirgens in Hamburg and A. Ostler in Mittenwald. He worked for J. Stiiber in The Hague and later in Vienna and Budapest. In 1929, he established himself independently in Amsterdam. He retired in 1976. He was a co-founder of the Association of Dutch violin makers (NGV). He made all forms of modern and historical bowed stringed instruments, including his own design of five-stringed instruments, which featured the treble bridge foot passing through the table and forming the soundpost. He adopted his mother's maiden name on his labels, which read 'Schmidt-Engelman' due to the presence of other unrelated makers named Schmidt active in Amsterdam at that time.
