George Wulme-Hudson
Violin maker
(1862 – 1952)
George Wulme-Hudson trained as a jeweller and violinist. He was a self-taught maker with some guidance from Thomas Jacques Holder and was active from 1897. To distinguish himself from his contemporary, George Hudson of Skegness, he added 'Vulme' to his name. Known as 'the second John Lott', he was a fine and prolific copyist of old Italian instruments. He was active in Lower Clapton in 1925 and supplied instruments to Edward Withers. Some of his work was of a minor class, being vague representations of generic forms, while others were very distinguished. Many pieces were labelled with facsimiles of original tickets or with the names of fictional Italian makers. He used the soubriquet 'Caressa', which is often found branded or written on the interior.
