Gabriel David Buchstetter
Violin maker
(fl. 1730 – 1780)
Gabriel David Buchstetter was the son of Christoff Buchstetter. He was a highly regarded maker known for his great individuality. Working on a model derived from Stradivari, he exhibited great finesse in craftsmanship, although he was let down by the rather thin and opaque varnish commonly used during that time and place. There was sometimes a hint of unattractive stain in the wood as well. His scrolls were very distinctive, featuring a long, swan-necked pegbox and a deep, open throat, along with a very concentric volute extending up behind the eye. He created very fine Stradivarian soundholes with subtle fluting in the lower wing. His work displayed well-regulated low arching and a generally fine choice of materials. Labels were frequently numbered, with an example from 1752 evidently being the 26th made. Labels appeared in both Gothic and Roman type.
