Frederick William Chanot, son of Georges Chanot (II), trained in Paris with his grandfather Georges (I) from 1864 to 1872. He returned to London to work for his father until 1881, after which he established himself independently at 179 Wardour Street and later Berners Street. Chanot published music under his own imprint, 'Edition Chanot', and eventually moved to 5 Soho Street. He produced three grades of violins: quality A at 20 guineas, quality B at 15 guineas, and quality C at 10 guineas. Gaining a reputation as a leading connoisseur in London, he was particularly skilled at varnish work and followed the family tradition of making antique finished instruments. He employed talented makers Carlo Giuseppe Oddone and Giovanni Gaida, who produced work for the Chanot label. F. W. Chanot. London. / Fecit A. D. 1899 F. WA / Messie' F. W. Chanot / F. W. Chanot.
