Violin maker
(1873 – 1958)
Timofey Filippovich Podgorny was a self-taught maker and repairer. He established himself professionally in Krasnodar (formerly Yekaterinodar) from 1900. Influenced by A. Leman, he moved to Moscow in 1913 and co-founded the First State School of Musical Instrument Making, where his pupils included I. Morozov and N. Frolov. He received prizes in Brussels in 1905, Antwerp in 1906, and Russia in 1913 and 1926. Podgorny completed over a thousand instruments, including 183 violas, and worked on bowed strings of all descriptions. He authored From a Maker's Notes (Moscow, 1960). His violin, viola, and viola d'amore are part of the Russian State Collection in Moscow. He passed away in Moscow in 1935.
