David Stirrat lived in Glasgow from 1794 to 1811. He established himself as a violin maker in Edinburgh starting in 1811. His workshop was initially located at 210 High Street, moving to Head of Fleshmarket Close in 1816, and then to 105 High Street in 1823. His work featured a distinctive character based on Stradivari models with a good low arch. The scrolls were slightly oval along the pegbox line, with the turns being a bit cramped and lightly chamfered. The materials he used were generally quite plain. His varnish was rich in texture and predominantly red-brown. At least one violin labeled by M. Hardie was found to be signed internally by Stirrat, but no further information about their relationship is known. It was signed internally.
