Claude Pierray
Violin maker
(1700 – 1740)
Finest of the early French makers, Claude Pierray was a contemporary of Jacques Boquay. Boquay's work was more highly priced during their lifetimes despite Pierray's superiority as an craftsman and his finer materials, but in general their instruments are similar in appearance. Pierray's output, which is sometimes taken for Italian, includes viols, violins and small cellos, and is especially admired by players.
