Guillaume Max Möller Jr.
(1915 – 1985)
Guillaume Max Möller was the son, pupil, and assistant of Paul Max Moller. He trained at Mittenwald and was employed by A. Dieudonne and C. Enel. In 1935, he moved to New York to work with Simone Sacconi in the workshop of Emil Herrmann. He returned to Amsterdam in 1948 and succeeded his father's shop, continuing to work there with K. Rutz, J. Santman, and later H. Leonhardt until his retirement in 1980. He received the Coupe du Gouvernment de Liège for a quartet in 1954 and frequently served as a member of competition juries. He authored The Violin-Makers of the Low Countries (1955) and co-founded the 'Entente des Maîtres Luthiers et Archetiers d'Art' as well as the Netherlands Group of Violin and Bow Makers (NGV). He was an honorary member of the Verband Deutscher Geigenbauer, a Knight of the Oranje Nassau, and a member of the Italian Order of the Crown. His violins and violas were based on a personal model, with the violas being particularly sought after. His varnish was a deeper red-brown than that used by his father, and his work was finely made to a very high standard.
