Nicolas Médard III
Violin maker
(b. 1628)
Nicolas Médard was the son of Henri Médard (I). Instruments were labelled from both Paris and Nancy, although it remains uncertain if he ever worked in Paris; this became a common practice among later Mirecourt luthiers. The Brussels Musical Instruments Museum housed a viol adorned with fleur-de-lys, dated 1701, and a viola from 1670 featuring painted decoration. Vannes mentioned another violin displaying the painted armorials of Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine. Other plain violins and violas exhibited the typical Médard family style of Amatisé modelling with a slightly watery red varnish. Internally branded was: `Nicolas Médard, à Nancy 1665'.
