Oreste Candi
Violin maker
(1865 – 1938)
The Candi brothers Cesare and Oreste worked alongside one another in the Bolognese workshop of Raffaele Fiorini in the 1880s before moving to Genoa in 1888. There Oreste and his brother started their own workshop, where they presumably collaborated, though they labeled their instruments separately. Oreste focused primarily on plucked instruments, though he also made a number of violins. His construction methods are reminiscent of his more famous younger brother's while his style exhibits a high degree of individuality. His early period before 1925 was especially experimental; later works show more classical inspiration, but the somewhat modest workmanship is more evident. Varnish is usually a rather hard orange-red.
