C. G. Conn founded a musical instrument factory in 1876, originally named Conn & Dupont, which specialized in brass and wind instruments. The company produced largely machine-made violins from 1912 to 1936. Several types were catalogued, including the prestigious 'Symphony' Stradivari and the 'Virtuoso' Guarneri model, as well as more affordable student-grade instruments under the titles 'Orchestra', 'Standard', 'Commercial', 'Student', and 'Amateur'.
