Walter H. Mayson
Violin maker
(1835 – 1904)
Born near Manchester, Walter Mayson was an and prolific eccentric maker who seems to have been self-taught. Despite the relative mediocrity of his work, he appears to have done reasonably well in the city of Manchester until the arrival of George Adolph Chanot, whose training far outclassed that of Mayson. After a decade or so in the rural Lake District, where he continued to make violins, Mayson returned to Manchester and was able to sustain some business there before deciding to set up a shop in London at the age of 64. The branch soon failed, but nevertheless Mayson continued his prodigious output of instruments, making over 800 in his lifetime. In general his work is rather heavy with broad, full arching, and often with idiosyncratic details, such as indented wings.
