Emmerich von Kabay III
Violin maker
(1916 – 1936)
Emmerich von Kabay was the son, pupil, and successor of Emmerich von Kabay (II). He served as an active member of the Beszkárt orchestra and was its official luthier. His work included Stradivari and Guarneri models, along with a personal model featuring very rounded upper bouts to enhance playability in the upper positions. He used spirit varnish in shaded colours. A diploma was awarded to him at the 1979 Triennale in Cremona. His printed labels were numbered but consistently indicated the year 1936, the year he completed his journeyman's examination as a luthier. Some of his instruments had 'Kabay' carved across the fluting in the back of the pegbox.
