Maximillian (Miksa) Frirsz was a leading maker of his time and period. He studied under Paul Pilat from 1899 to 1902. Afterward, he worked for Karl Niedt in Würzburg before establishing his own shop at 1 Raday Street, Budapest, in 1908. He was assisted there by Jozsef Mirth and Ferenc Mundl. In 1932, ...Read More his elder son Miksa jr. joined him, followed by his younger son Martin in 1942. This arrangement faced disruption during the Second World War, when Miksa jr. worked for Remenyi. The Frirsz shop remained operational until 1950. Up until 1940, Miksa snr. actively contributed to Barany's notorious 'English Workshop', fabricating copies of old Italian work for export, primarily to England and the USA. He received a diploma at the 1936 Budapest Trade Fair and a 'Golden Wreath' at the 1937 International Handwork Exhibition. His violins were made on Stradivari, Guarneri, and Nemessanyi patterns, showcasing great skill and finesse, with golden-orange varnish sometimes shaded to imitate age.
