Arthur W. Dykes
Violin maker
(d. 1961)
Arthur W. Dykes was born in Leeds, Yorkshire. He was the son of George Langton Dykes. He inherited the business of Dykes & Sons, which relocated from Leeds to New Bond Street and ultimately to Charing Cross Road in London, before closing in 1950. Primarily a dealer, expert, and writer on the violin, he published regularly in The Strad magazine. His contributions, which spanned from 1927 to 1939, consisted of colourful and very astute essays on various makers and schools of work. It is said that one or two instruments of his own make still exist. William Luff worked for the firm before the war. The Dykes shop was taken over by Cyril Jacklin under the name of Albert Arnold Ltd.
