Nicolaus Diehl
Violin maker
(1779 – 1851)
Nicolaus Diehl was the second son of Martin Diehl (I) and worked alongside his father and his uncle Jacob Steininger. Established in Darmstadt from 1811, he served as a repairer to the Grand Duke of Hesse. He was the most refined workman in the family. Although his early work still exhibited some Klotz-like characteristics, he developed a model influenced more by Italian styles, aspiring even to French levels of precision. This aspiration is particularly evident in the ornately carved heads of some cellos, which reflect the Lafleur manner. These cellos often appeared to have slightly oversized soundholes and featured well-colored but thin varnish.
