John Dickson
Violin maker
(c. 1772 – 1781)
A fine small viola was signed on the interior, with the address listed as Drury Lane. One example resembled the early Hill workshops, featuring a flat arch and pale golden yellow varnish. Another displayed professional craftsmanship in the Dodd style, characterized by fine red-brown oil varnish. The latter was a very small viola with a back length of 37. 5 cm (14 3/4"), compensating deep ribs, and a full arch, with rather oversized soundholes.
