John Devereux
Violin maker
(b. c. 1920)
John Devereux worked for Bernard Simon Fendt. He emigrated to Fitzroy, Australia in 1864, drawn by the gold rush of the time (according to the Hill Archive). There, he continued making instruments at his shop on Marion Street. He was chiefly valued for cellos and double basses, as he played the bass professionally; his violins were rather oversized. His workmanship and style showed obvious influences from Fendt, featuring classical models with a flat arch and good oil varnish.
