John Norris was a pupil of Thomas Smith and a business partner of Robert Barnes, who was also a pupil of Smith, from 1765 to 1794 in Great Windmill Street. After their business partnership dissolved, he relocated to 35 Coventry Street, where Richard and William Davis continued his shop. Labels stating 'at Bath' from around 1805 to 1818 likely indicated that he opened an office there while still maintaining ...Read More his London shop throughout that time. It is believed that neither he nor Barnes crafted most or even any of the instruments they labeled, as these were produced by various London craftsmen. Among these, the Dodds were probably the most significant, with a bow branded 'Norris & Barnes' thought to be the earliest identifiable work of John Dodd, sometimes branded on the upper back.
