Felice Mori Costa
Violin maker
(c. 1756 – c. 1825)
The work of 18th-century Emilian violin maker Felice Mori Costa remains relatively unknown despite his talent. His style displays numerous personal touches, such as uneven f-holes reminiscent of late Stradivari with extremely abbreviated inner notches. His choice of materials, especially for backs, can be uninspired, but varnish is sometimes of exceptional quality. Mori Costa frequently used his own model, but also turned to Guadagnini models from time to time. Few instruments bearing his label remain, which may partly explain the rarity of his work.
