Erminio Montefiori
Violin maker
(1841 – 1904)
Erminio Montefiori settled in Genoa in 1856. He trained as a sculptor and became a self-taught violin and bow maker starting in 1883, located at 4/4 vico S. Pasquale. Around 1903, he moved to Marseille, residing in rue Darse, where he passed away the following year. His work was interesting, utilizing salvaged wood from tables that exhibited old woodworm and other damage; the backs were quite plain or had an eccentric cut. He created a low-arched model with well-cut scrolls, which were very wide across the eyes. The varnish was yellow or golden-brown. His cellos were quite successful. He continued to use the Genoa label while working in Marseilles. Instruments were inscribed internally with various epigrams, and bows were branded: MONTEFIORI.
