Tetsuo Matsuda
Violin maker

Tetsuo Matsuda (1945–2022) was a Japanese violin maker based for much of his career in Chicago. Born in Akita, he first developed an interest in instrument making while working in a Tokyo guitar shop. In 1977 he moved to Cremona to study violin making, later winning prizes at the Wieniawski and Cremona competitions. After settling in Chicago, he established his own workshop and became one of the most respected contemporary makers in the United States. He received a Gold Medal from the Violin Society of America in 1984.
