Charles François Langonet
Violin maker
(1861 – 1929)
Charles François Langonet trained with Alexandre Delanoy in Mirecourt, where he was recognized by J. B. Vuillaume as 'a future Stradivarius. ' In 1880, he received an invitation from W. E. Hill & Sons to join their workshops in Hanwell, West London, where he remained for the rest of his life as foreman, except for wartime military service in France. During his time with the 94th regiment, he continued to carve scrolls and played the clarinet in the band. He produced many fine instruments for Hills, creating copies of notable classical examples, though very few bore his own label. He was also well-known as an excellent restorer.
