Thomas Edlinger was the son of Thomas Edlinger (I) and the son-in-law of Hummel, a lute maker. He had a workshop in Augsburg at the sign 'Bey den drey Geigen'. His work was rarely encountered. The flute featured a full, slightly boxy arching with a narrow edge. It had a distinctly squarish outline, slightly flattened across the end bouts, and long straight approaches to the small corners. The soundholes were long and open, and the varnish was a rich dark brown. The scroll resembled a viola d'amore style with a large eye. He was chiefly known as a lute maker. A pochette, viol, and lute were preserved in the De Wit collection at the Grassi Museum in Leipzig.
