Anton Posch
Violin maker
(1677 – 1742)
Anton Posch was a highly regarded and influential maker of the Viennese school, active from 1706. He was appointed luthier to the royal court in 1721. His instruments featured a Stainer-derived model with straightened centre bouts and a high arch. The workmanship was excellent, and the varnish was particularly fine, displaying a clear golden-yellow hue. The soundholes were set quite upright. The scroll was beautifully and delicately carved, characterized by a wide throw behind the first turn. Known for making violas, cellos, lutes, and guitars, he branded his instruments on the back with the Austrian double eagle after 1721.
