Joachim Tielke
                                    Violin maker
                                    (1641 – 1719)

Joachim Tielke was the son of Gottfried Tielke and a celebrated and prolific maker of lutes, viols of all kinds, violins, and cellos. His workshop in Hamburg produced over 150 instruments, many of which are preserved in museums across Europe. Most featured intensely detailed carving and inlay work. Several violins, two dated 1687 and one from 1684, have been identified as rare examples of discretion and elegance. They exhibited carved heads, small corners, flowing soundholes with small wings, and a medium arch with a deep narrow edge flute. His work was remarkably similar in many aspects to that of Christopher Wise in London during the same period.
