Gustave Methfessel apprenticed to P. Schulz in Regensburg and worked for Lembock in Vienna before establishing himself independently in Berne from 1864, later relocating to Hilterfingen. He traveled widely in Italy to study classical instruments and accumulated a notable collection, much of which was bequeathed to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
