John Crowther
Violin maker
(d. 1810)
John Crowther began work for John Kennedy in Clare Market. He subsequently operated from his own shops at 2 Ely Court around 1778 and at 22 Fetter Lane around 1792. His work featured Stradivari, Amati, and Stainer models, which were typical of the London trade during this period. He used purfling with a dense yellow core, a technique employed by many English makers. The materials were generally of meager quality, and the varnish had a dark red-brown color.
