Arnold Dolmetsch was a violinist and a pupil of Vieuxtemps in Brussels from approximately 1871 to 1873. He came to London to finish his studies at the Royal College of Music, where he developed an interest in the historical performance of music. Although not a luthier himself, he played a key role in introducing authentic performance and historical instruments to both academic and popular audiences. His workshops in Haslemere produced keyboards, lutes, viols, and the recorders for which he is likely best known. He employed many craftsmen, most notably G. Carley and L. Ward, who made and restored plucked and bowed instruments.
