Francesco Mantegazza
Violin maker
(1762 – 1824)
Francesco Mantegazza, born in 1787 in the Contrada di Santa Margarita in Milano, was the son, pupil, and successor of Pietro Giovanni Mantegazza. Together with his brother Carlo, he worked as Fratelli Mantegazza, becoming important makers and repairers, as well as informants for Count Cozio di Salabue, for whom they performed extensive repair and modernization work. They are generally credited with developing the technique of neck grafting, applied to numerous antique instruments with inadequate original neck settings. Their original work featured a very high finish, well-regulated with a harder varnish than that of their father, and exhibited a slightly cold golden yellow tone. They crafted finely worked concentric scrolls and slightly elongated yet elegant soundholes, with a series of contralto violas particularly esteemed.
