Earnest (Ernö) Szép
Violin maker
(b. 1913)
Earnest (Ernö) Szép was a self-taught maker until he apprenticed with L. Tonté around 1936. He established himself independently in 1939. In 1942, he served in National Service for the railway but continued to make violins in his free time. His personal models were derived from Stradivari. He produced clean, accurate work and used a pale yellow-brown spirit varnish. He signed his work internally: `Készitette / Szép Ernö / Debrecen, 1946. Op. 119'. A printed label read: Készitette: Szép Ernö / Hangverseny hegedii Keszitö Mester / Debrecen, 1946 Op. 119.
