Arthur John Barnes was a bow maker at W. E. Hill & Sons from 1919 to 1939. Originally trained as a cabinet maker, he produced bows stamped with the number 5. Although his deafness hindered his ability to communicate and limited him to making lesser grade bows, he was recognized as a skilled craftsman. He left the firm to serve in WWII.
