William John Acton
Bow maker / Violin maker
(1848 – 1931)
Worked first in Woolwich, then moved to Forest Gate in 1898. Good quality English making of this period but varied in design including Stradivari models, personal models and copies, constantly experimenting and frequently a little heavy around the edges, but his cellos are particularly prized. Also made ‘ancient instruments’. Following his move in 1898 he increasingly worked with bows as both a repairer and maker, although these are rare.
