William Tubbs
(1814 – 1878)
William Tubbs was the son and pupil of British bowmaker Thomas Tubbs and trained with James and Edward Dodd (II), becoming the successor to Edward Dodd III in 1851 after his death. He worked at several addresses in Lambeth and Soho, including Crescent Street Euston in 1841, 19 and later 41 Princes Street Soho in 1850, 45 Rupert Street in 1857, and finally at 1 Rupert Court from 1863. Tubbs was known for his prolific but inconsistent work, often found with the brands of various dealers. He made bows with the assistance of at least five of his sons, including the celebrated James and his brother Edward, and is credited with refining the model of the English bow, recovering its classical characteristics from the eccentricities of his father's work.
