William Glenister
(b. 1850)
William Glenister established himself at Beak Street as a businessman and self-taught amateur maker. He favored classical models, particularly the 1690 Stradivari 'Tuscan' violin. The instruments featured a flat arch and soundholes positioned quite close to the edge. Old pine was sourced from dilapidated buildings, and commercial varnish was provided by Whitelaw, Caffyn, or Urquhart. His workmanship was noted to be good, with approximately 70 instruments recorded. The manuscript label read: Wm. Glenister / 23 Beak Street / London. / 1899.
