William Gilkes
Violin maker
(1811 – 1875)
William Gilkes was the son and pupil of Samuel Gilkes. He established his business at 14 Dartmouth Street in 1835. He later relocated to several addresses: Wandsworth in 1857, 14 Charlwood Street, Vauxhall in 1860, Dartmouth Street in 1866, and finally to 3 Upper Marsh Street, Lambeth. It was said that he varnished and sold instruments supplied by Richard Tobin. He copied various classical models, including some double-purfled Brescian instruments. His double basses were very fine, but his work generally lacked the distinction of his father's best efforts. He used several grades of varnish, ranging from thin golden-amber to dark highly textured red-brown. His instruments were branded below the button.
