Karl Otto Zimmer
Violin maker
(1865 – 1919)
Karl Otto Zimmer was the brother and pupil of Karl Zimmer. From 1885, he worked for Jüling and Weichold in Dresden. After a brief period in Leipzig, he was employed by W. J. Schunda in Budapest starting in 1892. He established himself independently there in 1896. He received medals in Paris in 1900 and in Hungary. Later, he concentrated on pianos and guitars. His son Oliver succeeded him. His professional work was fine, with early instruments based on Brescian patterns. He later developed models inspired by Stradivari, Guarneri, and fine Guadagnini. His instruments were accurately observed and well finished, featuring his own oil varnish in suitable shades. They were branded internally as 'Zimmer K. O. Budapest'.
