Roelof Weertman
Violin maker

Roelof Weertman trained as a naval architect. He became an amateur maker around 1915, receiving guidance from Hanken in Rotterdam. He emigrated to the USA in 1923. Employed as an engineer, he worked with G. M. Francois in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1931 to 1937. He established himself in Beaver, Pennsylvania from 1930 to 1957, later moving to Falmouth, Massachusetts in 1962 upon his retirement as an engineer. Most of his instruments were crafted there, including about 200 violins, 150 violas, and 51 cellos, all based on many classical Italian models. Local materials were utilized, and he used his own copal and shellac varnish. He received certificates at the Violin Society of America competition in 1976.
