Andrea Cortese
Violin maker
(1889 – 1954)
One of very few Italian violin makers who took up the trade out of passion rather than necessity, Andrea Cortese was born to a wealthy Genoese family and began making violins around 1910. While his work cannot be placed squarely in the Genoa school, he received guidance from Cesare Candi and passed on his materials and tools to Giuseppe Lecchi upon his death in 1954. Stradivari and Pressenda were his two primary models, and the scrolls sometimes show a Piedmontese influence. Cortese's work rises considerably higher than the amateur level, and is generally precise and careful.
