Henry Thorowgood was an entrepreneurial dealer in trade work made by outworkers. The shop was established at the sign of the 'Violin & Guitar' in the North Piazza, Royal Exchange. From around 1864, he worked in partnership, and the business became known as Thorowgood & Home, relocating to Cheapside.
