John Rae
Violin maker
(b. 1847)
John Rae, a Scottish violin maker and the son and grandson of bagpipe makers, worked in London from approximately 1875 to 1920. He derived personal models and completed over 130 instruments, including violas and cellos, which featured internal inscriptions. Notable works include No. 50, created in 1901, and No. 112, made in 1919. In 1920, he produced a copy of the "Dolphin" Strad 1714 and also crafted a copy of the violin known as the "Messiah," which is numbered No. 19 and was made in London.
