John Albert
Violin maker
(c. 1809 – 1887)
John Albert practiced law in Germany. He emigrated to the USA in 1848, working in New York. He apprenticed with Matthias Keller in Philadelphia and succeeded to his business in 1857. He created the American Star Violin Company, a mass manufacturer of quality violins later inherited by his son Eugene John Albert. He used Guarneri models and produced fine work with golden-brown spirit varnish, often utilizing American maple. He signed directly on the back interior or with handwritten labels.
