Marcus Stainer
Violin maker
(c. 1633 – c. 1693)
Marcus Stainer is usually described as the brother of Jacob Stainer, although there is no evidence supporting his existence. Senn and Vannes suggested that the name might be fictional, utilized by dealers and fraudsters. Instruments labeled with his name closely resemble the style of Jacob Stainer, being finely crafted with dull red-brown varnish. The 18th-century Florentine virtuoso F. M. Veracini reportedly owned a pair of violins by Marcus Stainer, which he named 'Saint Peter' and 'Saint Paul'; unfortunately, they were lost in a shipwreck in the English Channel in 1746.
