Job Ardern
Violin maker
(1826 – 1912)
Job Ardern apprenticed as a carpenter. He began making violins in 1855 as a hobby and was self-taught. Over 500 instruments were produced, which he rarely offered for sale. The majority were acquired after his death by W. E. Hill & Sons, who set them up in their own workshops and sold them primarily abroad. His instruments were very pleasant and distinctive, based on an Amati model. They featured nicely regulated softened edges and a good clear dark orange or red-brown varnish. The scrolls were pretty, and the soundholes were fairly long with a slightly exaggerated sweep.
