Job Ardern apprenticed as a carpenter. He began making violins in 1855 as a hobby and was self-taught. Over 500 instruments were produced, which he rarely offered for sale. The majority were acquired after his death by W. E. Hill & Sons, who set them up in their own workshops and sold them primarily abroad.
