Jeffrey James Gilbert

Jeffrey James Gilbert was the son of Jeffrey Gilbert and largely self-taught. He established himself in New Priestgate, Peterborough in 1875. He received medals at the Crystal Palace in London in 1884, the Inventors' Exhibition in 1885, and Edinburgh in 1890. In 1938, he moved to Richmond. He produced over 350 violins, 40 violas, and 12 cellos. His work featured various models, consistently demonstrating fine workmanship, although the scrolls were often a bit heavy in design. Throughout his career, he used different varnishes. His work was signed internally.
